I have a confession. My natural hair is damaged! Well, kinda at least.
If you know me, then you know that I LOVE to switch my hair up. I can have box braids one week and be wearing a wig the next. What can I say? I just love to try new things with my hair! But, I recently realized that because of all those changes my natural hair may need some extra TLC.
This summer I’m challenging myself to wear my natural hair out more. Instead of covering it up and hoping that it stays healthy, I’m going back to my old ways and actually taking care of it the way I should. As I start this journey back to healthy hair I wanted to let you guys in on some of my current hair goals and my favorite natural hair products so far.
Let’s get started.
My Natural Hair Goals
Since learning that my hair could use some extra care, I’ve decided to create some hair goals. I’m hoping these goals will keep me on track and motivate me to stay natural all summer.

My top three goals are to redefine my curl pattern (specifically at the front of my head), grow my hair at least 2 inches by September, and master 2 go-to natural styles.
I think these goals are pretty obtainable! Again, my hair isn’t badly damaged, so I wanted to hone in on things that would enhance my hair. Honestly, I feel like I need this summer to teach myself what it means to be natural again. That may sound a bit weird, but it’s the truth!
Natural Hair Products to Try
I am a strong believer in staying faithful to a product line if it works for you. My go to product lines are Mielle Organics and As I Am. Since I have 4C low porosity hair, I need a lot of moisture. However, due to my low porosity it’s hard for moisture to lock in. Both Mielle’s and As I Am’s products leave my hair feeling moisturized, without feeling heavy and hold my curls beautifully! Literally, as I type I’m on day 7 of a twist out I did using Mielle and As I Am products. All of their products also smell AMAZING.
Mielle Organics
Pomegranate & Honey Leave-in Conditioner – If you’re looking for a lightweight leave-in conditioner that locks in moisture this is it! I’ve found the product works best if I use it while my hair is soaking wet. (I think I have my low porosity hair to thank for that!)
Pomegranate & Honey Moisturizing and Detangling Conditioner – I don’t use regular conditioner often, but when I do this is my choice! This provides great slip making detangling an enjoyable task (kinda!).
Pomegranate & Honey Twisting Soufflé – If you know me then you know I LOVE a good twist-out, and this product is one of the main products I use when I do my twist-outs. It never fails, and like all Mielle products, it smells great.
Pomegranate & Honey Coil Sculpting Custard – This product is my go-to for wash-and-go’s. It’s great at defining my curls without leaving them feeling heavy.
Hawaiian Ginger Moisturizing Styling Gel – This is the gel that made me realize I don’t need ECO styler gel anymore! Although Mielle Organic’s website says this is for type 3 hair it works great for me. I use it for twist-outs, wash-and-go’s (ocassionally), and slick back ponytails/buns.
Rosemary Mint Leave-in Conditioner – This leave-in is also a great option if you can’t get your hands on the Pomegranate & Honey Leave-in. I like to use the two interchangeably since I am also obsessed with the Rosemary Mint product line!
Rosemary Mint Strengthening Hair Masque – This hair masque works so well with my hair. I try to use it at least once a month and the results are instant. My curl pattern is so defined after using this and it leaves my hair feeling so soft. It also smells great!
Rosemary Mint Strengthening Shampoo – This is the only shampoo I use currently. It’s one of few sulfate free shampoos that actually removes all dirt/oil from my hair (in my opinion!).
Rosemary Mint Scalp & Hair Strengthening Oil – I’ve tried hair growth oils in the past, and not many have worked. Thankfully, this is one of the ones that work! I apply this three times a week and massage it into my scalp. I’ve noticed my hair has grown some. Keep in mind that your hair won’t grow a ton, but it does help with length retention I’d say!
Mint Almond Oil – I use this as an every other day (not everyday lol) moisturizer. I also apply it if my my hair needs a pick-me up. I love the smell of mint, if you couldn’t tell, so of course this also smells amazing to me! It’s the perfect lightweight oil.
As I Am
Double-butter Cream – I’ve used this product for about 4 years now and it’s never done me wrong! I use it for added moisture with my twist-outs, braid-outs, bantu knots, etc. It’s a thicker consistency, similar to shea butter (hence the name), so keep that in mind!
Coconut CoWash – When I’m in-between styles and not yet ready for a full wash I use this cowash. Similar to the double-butter cream I’ve been using this for the past 4 years and it still does the trick, every-time! It also leaves my hair feeling soft and moisturized.
